Higher education has always played a pivotal role in Palestinian society. This is evidenced by the number of higher educational institutions available. To obtain a university degree, four years of college is required and additional for a graduate degree. Two-year degrees are also available.
To illustrate the importance of education to Palestinian society: During the first Palestinian uprising or Intifada (1987-93), universities were routinely closed by the Israeli administration. However, universities like Birzeit University, often set up an underground network in order to continue the students’ education.
